Leaving Your 9 To 5 To Be A Babe In Business? Read These 6 Tips First!

So you’re totally doing it!

You’re going to quit your day job and start your own business. You can literally taste the excitement every time you think about it.

But you don’t want to go crawling back to your 9-to-5 in defeat.

You want to make big things happen.

And we’re so here for it. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our go-to strategies for when you’re ready to make the leap.

So, let’s dive right in.

#1 Love Your “Why”

  • Whenever you start something new, whether it's a new exercise routine or a new business, you want to be sure you know exactly why you’re doing it. Here are some questions to get you started:

  • Why am I done with this job?

  • Why this business?

  • What am I excited to do in my new business?

  • What’s it going to really look like to work for myself?

  • Where and when do I want to work?

  • Am I financially ready to leave my job?

  • Am I ready to put myself out there to grow my business?

  • What’s that going to look like?

And after you read the rest of our list, make sure your exit from your current job is a good one.

#2 Quit With Kindness

Whether you’re confident that your new company will be a massive success or not sure what to expect, you’ll want to leave your current employer on good terms.

This means giving the appropriate notice and completing any of your final assignments. For some of us, it might even mean training our replacement. Whatever it looks like for you, be sure you leave on your terms and on good terms with your employer.

#3 Get Your Business Basics Together

While creating a brand mission and vision, writing for your Instagram, and designing a logo can be a lot of fun, you’ll also want to get your basic business things in order.

You might want to find a lawyer and an accountant to chat with about these things and you might want to bounce ideas off of your fellow Babes In Business as you prepare to launch.

Not sure how to begin?

Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself:

  • What business area or market are you going into?

  • Who might your competitors be?

  • How will you fund your business (investors, grants, or your own savings?)

  • Are you starting a sole proprietorship, an LLC, or a corporation?

  • Will you have a brick-and-mortar business, host on-location pop-ups, or have an online store?

  • Is your business name already taken?

  • Who will do your taxes?

Now that you’ve got some of your basics down, let’s talk about your favorite people: Your customers!

#4 Get Clear On Who You’re Serving… Really Freaking Clear.

There’s this saying in business that “If you talk to everyone, you talk to no one.” and it’s pretty darn true.

If you’re going to connect with your favorite people, you’ll want to get really, really clear on who they are.

You’ll want to know their pet peeves, their struggles, and what issues they’ve got. You’ll want to know all of these things so you can serve them better and talk to them in their language. And since we’re on the topic of talking to your customers...

#5 Make marketing a part of your plan from the start

You don’t want to open your business and hear crickets. So, you need to make sure you’re getting the word out about your business ASAP.

From networking at events (::cough:: Babes In Business), to social media, your go-to marketing strategy might be different than someone else’s.

But the most important thing is that you are marketing your business and that you have an actual plan about how to do it. From killer visuals to just the right words, the right marketing plan will give you the chance to make a big impact.

And if you’re not sure where to even start with a marketing plan or any of the other things on this list… We’ve got a tip for that too!

#6 Lean on your support system and grow it

So we’ve covered a lot of ground in this list. Take a deep breath. You’ve totally got this.

And the best part is that you don’t need to know everything and everyone to get started.

Think about it: Do you know

  • An accountant?

  • A web developer?

  • A lawyer?

  • A marketing maven?

  • A copywriter?

  • A distributor for your products?

  • An expert on getting that book deal?

The better question: Do you know a babe who knows a babe like that?

Because we do.
